The Man Who Planted Trees

By Matt Humphrey

Inspired by the short story by Jean Giono, this series explores the profound connection between nature and human transformation, through analog blended photography. The deliberate fusion of blended film exposures allow for multiple narratives and create dreamlike tapestries – inviting viewers to explore the delicate dance between the natural world and the human spirit. These framed landscapes become a canvas for the interplay of light, shadow, growth, rebirth, and profound change. It is my hope that this visual odyssey serves as a catalyst for introspection, urging us to reevaluate our relationship with the planet and the potential for positive metamorphosis.

The process involves the film being shot twice through the camera – each time only exposing half of the frame so that left and right merge and blend organically, and in-camera.
